V-plain のは/が~
Nominalizing verbs with の
Plain form + の turns an action into a noun phrase: 絵を描くのは楽しい. More specific than a bare verb as topic: 絵を描くの vs 絵を描く.
星を見るのが好きです。
財布を持つのを忘れました。
V-plain のが好き/上手/下手
の with skill/like adjectives
Use の when the adjective describes an activity: 花を育てるのが上手, 歌を歌うのが下手. Adjectives include 好き, 嫌い, 上手, 下手, 得意, 苦手.
東京の人は歩くのが速いです。
私たちは花を育てるのが得意です。
V-plain のになれます/忘れます
Habit with の (なれます, 忘れます)
For habitual actions, の appears before なれます or 忘れました: 牛乳を買うのになりました, 車の窓を閉めるのを忘れました.
車の窓を閉めるのを忘れました。
~知っていますか
Do you know...? (知っていますか)
知っていますか asks if the listener already knows a fact. 知っていませんか invites new information the listener may not know yet. Answers: 知っています / 知りません.
宮崎さんが赤ちゃんを生んだことを知っていますか。
……いいえ、知りません。いつですか。
N/V-plain 時
When (時)
時 marks when something happens: 日本に来た時, 小学校の時. It can clarify or correct what was said: 生まれたのはチェンマイです (not where you assumed).
初めて恋人に会った時は小学校の音楽の時間です。
~のに
Contrast with のに
のに shows unexpected result: 3日しか書かなかったのに、続けるのは難しい. Often used when effort and outcome do not match.
日記を書き始めたのに、3日でやめました。
