Grammar

N1 は N2 です

N1 is N2 (statement with です)

は (read "wa") marks the topic; です ends a polite statement and works like "is/am/are".

わたしがくせいです。

アレックスさんはかいしゃいんです。

N1 は N2 じゃありません

N1 is not N2 (negative)

Replace です with じゃありません (or the more formal ではありません) to make it negative.

わたしせんせいじゃありません。

アレックスさんはしゃじゃありません。

N1 は N2 ですか

Yes/no question with か

Add か to the end to make a yes/no question. No question mark is needed in Japanese.

あなたはがくせいですか。

あのひとせんせいですか。

Answers

Answer はい、そうです ("yes, that's right") or いいえ、ちがいます ("no, that's wrong"); you can also answer with the full sentence - affirmative (はい、~です) or negative (いいえ、~じゃありません).

はい、がくせいです。

いいえ、がくせいじゃありません。

はい、そうです。

いいえ、ちがいます。

N も

も (also, too)

も replaces は to say the same thing is also true for another topic ("...too").

アレックスさんもかいしゃいんです。

わたしがくせいです。

N1 の N2

の (affiliation / belonging)

の links two nouns; here the first noun (company, school, country) tells which group the second belongs to.

わたしはさくらだいがくがくせいです。

あのひとほんせんせいです。

N はだれですか

Asking who (だれ / どなた)

Ask who someone is with だれ. どなた is the polite version, used with あのかた.

あのひとはだれですか。

あのかたはどなたですか。

Answers

Answer by naming the person or their role with N1 は N2 です.

あのひとはアレックスさんです。

あのかたはやまだせんせいです。

N はなんさいですか

Asking age (なんさい / おいくつ)

Ask age with なんさい. おいくつ is the polite version.

ゆきちゃんはなんさいですか。

おいくつですか。

Answers

Answer with a number + さい; 20 years old is the special reading はたち.
